Klopp hails Supercup-like intensity as Dortmund destroy Augsburg

The coach was proud of die Schwarzgelben for replicating their early-season promise at SGL Arena, praising the commitment his team showed to secure an opening-day win

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp hailed his troops for replicating the intensity of their stirring DFL-Supercup success in routing Augsburg 4-0 in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday.

Die Schwarzgelben encountered spirited opposition at SGL Arena before summer arrival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had broken the deadlock 24 minutes in, sealed a sensational debut in Germany's top flight by completing his hat-trick during an impressive second-half showing.

Klopp, who watched his side stun Bayern Munich 4-2 in the Supercup, reiterated the squad would have to maintain such high levels of effort and endeavour if they are to also wrest the league title away from die Roten.

"I pointed out to my team that our intensity would have to be the same as all other matches before, the Supercup included," the 46-year-old told reporters after the match.

"It was hard for both teams because the pitch conditions were bad. Augsburg tackled hard and caused problems when we lacked the right intensity.

"Our opponents were extremely strong but in the second half we won the ball more and found more space. We scored great goals and finished the game with confidence.

"Not many win here 4-0, and the fact that we did makes us proud."

The Signal Iduna Park outfit quickly reinvested the €37 million received from Mario Gotze's sale to Bayern, signing Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Klopp's reinforced side will now host promoted Eintracht Braunschweig next Sunday in the hope of extending their impressive start to the new campaign.
