Chelsea FC vs Roma Report

Chelsea 2-1 Roma: Lampard and Lukaku give Blues comeback win

The Giallorossi struck early through a Mark Schwarzer howler, but the Londeners came back to earn the win at RFK Stadium.

Two second half goals gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Roma in a friendly at RFK Stadium on Saturday night.

The Italians opened the scoring thanks to a Mark Schwarzer howler, but Chelsea struck back with second-half goals from Frank Lampard and a late winner from Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea got off to a flying start as Roma goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis had to be alert in the second minute to deny a Michael Essien volley off a great layoff from Fernando Torres.

There wasn't much action until 20 minutes later, when Chelsea goalkeeper Schwarzer gift-wrapped Roma the opener. The Australian misplayed a routine back pass, allowing the ball to bounce off his post and back to Eric Lamela, who slammed home from two yards away.

Schwarzer would partially make amends 10 minutes later, when he got down quickly to save a Pablo Osvaldo effort that was bound for the bottom corner.

The Italians would frustrate their opposition for the remainder of the half, save for one neat spell of combination play before the half between Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle. The German's shot flew just over the goal with De Sanctis at full stretch.

Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes at the half, and it appeared to turn the tide in Chelsea's favor, as the Blues pressured the Roma goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half, although the Italians' defense held firm.

It didn't take long for the pressure to pay off though. Demba Ba's neat layoff found Lampard, who was left with a wide open look from the top of the arc. The veteran midfielder made no mistake, cracking a low drive into the near corner for the equalizer.

Chelsea carried the balance of play for the next 15 minutes, but Roma had chances to take the lead as well, but the Giallorossi were let down by a lack of cutting edge around the goal.

With only minutes remaining, Chelsea found a winner. Eden Hazard made the play happen, snaking his way past the Roma defense on the end-line before pulling the ball back for Demba Ba. The striker found his forward partner Lukaku, whose deflected shot found its way into the back of the net from close range.

Rooney left out of Manchester United squad for Community Shield

The wantaway striker is still out of action due to a shoulder injury and will play no part against Wigan in Sunday's match at Wembley, with Ashley Young and Nani also sidelined

Manchester United manager David Moyes has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will miss the club's Community Shield match against Wigan Athletic on Sunday with a shoulder injury.
The 27-year-old has yet to feature for the Premier League champions in pre-season, and was banished to the reserves on Thursday as he angles for a move to Chelsea.

Rooney has been selected for England's upcoming friendly against Scotland despite his lack of fitness, though will play no part in Sunday's match against Wigan.

"I am pleased about that [Rooney's call-up]. I had a long conversation with Roy [Hodgson, England manager] last week about it and told him Wayne’s situation," Moyes told the club's official website.

"Wayne has had a shoulder injury which has meant he has not been able to have any contact and it has been sore, so he hasn’t trained with us. He has trained a little bit with the reserves as a non-contact player, a floating player, so he has at least got a little bit of football work done.

"He trained with the first team on Saturday and did a bit of extra work [afterwards], so he is probably more likely to be ready for England than he will be for us.

"He hasn't had a lot of football practice which I explained to Roy and I would only expect Roy to play him for a short time.

"Hopefully Wayne is not in too good form because it would be good if Scotland could get a result!"

Moyes also confirmed that wingers Ashley Young and Nani will miss Sunday's trip to Wembley through injury, though Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra are expected to return to the side after United suffered defeat in Friday's friendly against Sevilla.

Aubameyang savours 'dream' Dortmund debut

The 24-year-old joined BVB from Saint-Etienne this summer and marked his first game for the club with three goals

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang labelled his hat-trick scoring debut a "dream" after firing his new club to a 4-0 opening day victory over Augsburg.

The 24-year-old moved to Signal Iduna Park for a reported €13 million from Saint-Etienne earlier this summer and despite noting the greater quality of the Bundesliga, wasted little time in making an impression at his new club on Saturday.

''It is like a dream for me, an unbelievable feeling. I feel right in Dortmund,” he told Bild.

“The Bundesliga is much more intensive than the Ligue 1. Here you have much more tempo and I have to work in the defence, but it is okay.

"When we can continue our good work then we will have a great season. The first goal was something special for me and I wanted to celebrate it in a special way.''

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp then revealed his belief that Aubameyang can become even more dangerous in the months ahead, while defender Neven Subotic hailed the Gabon international's flawless first outing.

''He can do much more. He can hurt the opponents more,” Klopp said.

Subotic added: "It was a great example how you can have a perfect first game."

Dortmund next tackle Eintracht Braunschweig at home on October 19.

The Sweeper: Manchester United in pre-season cash windfall

The Red Devils added to their bank balance following trips to the Far East while Newcastle have agreed to pay Loic Remy's full wages to take him on loan from Championship side QPR

Manchester United might not have made any notable signings so far this summer, but their cash tills are ringing.

The Red Devils have clocked over 26,000 miles in pre-season, travelling to Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong as part of their preparations for the 2013-14 campaign.

And thanks to a succession of tie-ups in the Far East in particular, the Red Devils have banked around £4 million this summer.

Along with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, United's brand remains one of the strongest in world football, with millions of supporters across the globe.

Monday's meeting with AIK in Stockholm was a further example of the club's powerful sponsorship strategy, with the Premier League champions' various partners splashed on all the hoardings for what was effectively an away fixture.

Loic Remy signed for Newcastle on a season-long loan this week only after the Premier League club agreed to pay his whopping £80,000-a-week wages in full.

The 26-year-old agreed to join the Magpies from QPR for the campaign as he felt that he needed to be playing in the top flight to boost his chances of playing with France at the World Cup next summer.

Newcastle wanted the Rs to pay a significant portion of Remy's wages but eventually agreed to pay the former Marseille man’s salary in full.

Remy's preference was to move to Tottenham, who are long-term admirers of the versatile forward, but the Londoners' interest was only lukewarm.

Spurs were also unwilling to pay his salary in full, while QPR accepted that the rape allegations that Remy is facing meant that no club would meet their £5 million asking price.

Goals and trophies on Villa agenda

The Spain striker scored just 14 times in 43 appearances at Camp Nou last season but feels he can get back to his best with his new club
David Villa says he is the man to fire Atletico Madrid to more silverware after undergoing a gruelling pre-season of fitness work.
Villa joined Atleti from Barcelona in July for €5.1million and scored his first goal for the club by grabbing the opener in their 2-0 win over Segunda Division outfit Deportiva Las Palmas on Saturday.
"For a striker the most important thing is to score goals and it is important scoring a goal on your debut," Villa told reporters.
"I am very happy because we worked hard this pre-season.
The 31-year-old then revealed he is adapting well to a new style of play under Diego Simeone and explained how he had done additional fitness work to get up to speed with his new team-mates.
"After the training all this week I am getting better and I'm very happy and very pleased that everything is going well," he said.
"Slowly I'm getting used to the team and it is a very clear system and it has been good to play these minutes with my team-mates. Now I must keep working.
"The work in pre-season has been very good and I feel good physically.
"It was something that we had spoken about because as you know I have not been on the tour and stopped in Madrid to do extra work and it was best to wait to make my debut here.
Atleti enjoyed a successful campaign last term, winning the European Supercup with victory over Chelsea before lifting the Copa del Rey after beating arch-rivals Real Madrid in the final and Villa is keen to continue that winning trend.
The former Barca and Valencia man said: "Now the league begins and we are keen to challenge in all competitions.
"It's just around the corner and we have very difficult games both in the league and the Super Cup.
"We all looking to start in the best way possible."
Atletico Madrid get their Liga campaign underway against Sevilla next Sunday.

Di Maria and Pepe rule out Real Madrid exits

Di Maria and Pepe rule out Real Madrid exitsThe pair have been tipped to leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer but insist they have no intention of moving

Angel Di Maria and Pepe have insisted they will both be Real Madrid players next season, despite continued reports linking them with a move to the Premier League.

Di Maria has been strongly linked with a switch to Tottenham as part of a deal to bring Gareth Bale to the Santiago Bernabeu, but says he will definitely not be leaving the Spanish capital.

"I'm staying in Madrid, because I have three years left on his contract and I'm very happy here,” the 25-year-old told journalists following the side’s 3-0 friendly win over Inter.

"Also in (Ancelotti’s) selection, I have been playing more frequently in the middle. I’m used to and I feel comfortable playing there."

Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in Pepe, 30, with Manuel Pellegrini keen to strengthen his backline, though the Portuguese claims the thought of a transfer has not crossed his mind after praising new boss Carlo Ancelotti.

“I have signed a contract with Madrid, my future is an issue for the president," he said. “I just train hard and try to give my best for the team. I am ready to fight for my place.”

“The coach is very close to the squad, and that's a good sign. He has great affection for the players. He is also great tactically and that is helping us a lot.

“The most important thing for us is to start with a win. We are just thinking about the first three points.”

Pepe lost his place in the starting XI last season after the emergence of Raphael Varane as Jose Mourinho's first choice centre-back, but with the coach having left the club and the Frenchman injured, he could have the opportunity to win back his starting berth.

Falcao and Monaco start with a bang

The Colombia international netted with just three minutes to go in his first game for the victorious Rouges et Blanc, while Lyon also made a winning start to their campaign

Radamel Falcao scored on his Ligue 1 debut to help big-spending Monaco record an opening-day 2-0 victory over Bordeaux.

The Colombian striker had to wait until the final three minutes to get his first strike for the club, reacting quickest to control a loose ball before squeezing his shot under Cedric Carrasso from close range.

Falcao's strike came five minutes after substitute Emmanuel Riviere had broken the deadlock with a left-footed volley shortly after replacing James Rodriguez.

Speaking to journalists after the game, El Tigre reflected upon the club's opening matchday fortunes.

"First match, first win - it's a good thing. It's given us confidence for what is to follow."

"We had many chances in the first half. But the team kept going. This was more difficult in the second half and we had to wait for the right time. This has brought us a smile."

Lyon cruised to a 4-0 victory over Nice at Stade Gerland, with Alexandre Lacazette scoring twice for the seven-time French champions.

Clement Grenier and Yoann Gourcuff also got their names on the scoresheet as Remi Garde's side made short work of the team they finished one place and three points ahead of last season.

Like Monaco, fellow Ligue 1 newboys Nantes started their campaign with a victory.

Goals from Filip Dordevic and a Julian Palmieri own goal gave Michel Der Zakarian's side a 2-0 win against Bastia, with both sides having a man sent off after the break.

Toulouse had a disappointing start the season with a 3-0 defeat at Valenciennes.

Uros Spajic's sending off just after the half hour gave the hosts a penalty that Maor Melikson converted, with Jose Saez and Gregory Pujol sealing the three points in the second half.

There were also opening-day victories for Lille and Rennes over 10-man Lorient and Reims, respectively, while Evian were held to a 1-1 draw by Sochaux after Roy Contout's strike cancelled out Fabrice Ehret's opener.
